The Department of Chemistry launched two postgraduate programs in Biochemistry and Biotechnology: the MSc in Biochemistry and Biotechnology (2 years, 60 credits) and the Master of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (1 year, 30 credits) designed to equip graduates with advanced knowledge and hands-on experience that enable the graduates to make significant contributions to industry and research. These disciplines are increasingly critical in healthcare, environmental management, agriculture, and food processing, where advanced techniques are essential for enhancing the competitiveness of Sri Lankan products in international markets.
These programs are designed to provide comprehensive theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills in Biochemistry. The program curriculum is designed to engage the students in research activities in Biochemistry and Biotechnology to gain hands on experience as they participate in practical sessions and conduct research pursuing case studies.
The primary aim of the M Bchem & Btech and MSc (Bchem & Btech) Degree Programs is to develop graduates and professionals equipped with the scientific knowledge and laboratory skills essential for industries and organizations engaged in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, and related research and development activities.
Moreover, the MSc Degree Program, which includes both coursework and a research component, is designed to empower graduates and professionals with the capability to conduct independent research in fields related to Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
Upon completion of the master programs, graduates will acquire comprehensive knowledge in fundamental biochemical, biotechnology, and bioinformatics techniques. This expertise is crucial for understanding their industrial applications, preparing students for successful careers in science, and producing graduates equipped with highly marketable skills that meet the demands of both academia and industry. Graduates of the degree programs will gain in-depth theoretical knowledge of both basic and advanced biochemical and biotechnology techniques, including molecular biology and bioinformatics.
The M Bchem & Btech Degree Program equips postgraduates with the knowledge, skills, and expertise required to address and solve complex challenges in Biochemistry and Biotechnology, enabling them to excel in competitive translational research and industrial environments. Furthermore, the MSc (Bchem & Btech) Degree Program, which includes coursework and a research component, prepares postgraduates to make significant contributions to research and development initiatives, driving innovation and improvement within the biochemical and biotechnology industries and organizations.
